The Cars may be driving towards a reunion

Facebook photo showing band members in the studio sparks rumours that the new wave rockers are to re-form
It’s amazing what one little photograph can do. An image posted to the Cars’ Facebook group has sparked rumours that the new wave band are to reunite.
Although the Cars have not have performed together since 1987, this new photograph shows four familiar faces jamming in the studio. (The Cars’ fifth member, bassist Benjamin Orr, died of pancreatic cancer in 2000.) The image was initially captioned: “Anyone in the mood for a reunion by the Cars?” This note has been taken down, but the answer from fans was, as you might expect: YES.
Last week, the Boston Globe asked keyboardist Greg Hawkes if a reunion was likely. “I hate to be vague, but I really can’t say,” he said, coyly. Frontman Ric Ocasek, drummer David Robinson and guitarist Elliot Easton have yet to comment on the rumours. But in February, Ocasek did tell Rolling Stone that he was working on “surprise” new material. Hawkes and Easton previously toured as the New Cars in 2005.
The Cars’ power-pop is an important contribution to new wave music in the US, where they scored four top 10 albums. Although the Cars never saw the same success in the UK, their hits included 1978′s My Best Friend’s Girl and 1984′s Drive, which featured in the Live Aid documentary.
